Exploring Industry Players

Before you start your strategic work, it’s helpful to get a feel for what fellow industry players are up to. Think of it as a contextual scan that gives you a sense for how they’re positioning themselves in the market and what channels they’re using to reach dreamy clients / users / consumers.

Who is your dreamy client?

To hone in on your dreamy clients, you’ll build personas. These are semi-fictional characters that represent the different people who currently use your products or services, or who you’d like to be your primary customer. They’re crafted based on demographic and psychographic information.

Your Differentiators

These are the unique and compelling aspects of your brand that resonate with clients, and they aren’t as ownable among your competitors.

Chapter 4

Your Value Proposition

Write a straightforward statement that succinctly captures why a customer would choose your brand, and the most obvious benefit they’ll get. It’s basically a MadLib that outlines who you help and how you solve their core problem.

Vision, Mission, & Values

This aspirational message describes where the brand wants a community – or the world – to be as a result of the company’s services. Think pie-in-the sky. The mission is what gets you there, and your values are how your brand moves through the marketplace.
